Where California
runs short of care

A composite index across 1,389 ZIP code areas, combining healthcare supply, health burden and access barriers. Shown with its uncertainty, not without it.

How to read this map

Each area is shaded by the chance it belongs to the worst-served 10% of California, estimated by rebuilding the index many times from resampled data. Hatching marks areas with too few residents or recorded deaths for a score that would mean anything. When an area is selected, the bar under its name is the span its rank could plausibly take, not just where it lands on average.
